9 – EYES WIDE SHUT by Stanley Kubrick (1999)
The bad guys in Ford’s movie may as well be redneck American Droogs, but as a whole, Nocturnal Animals is much closer to Eyes Wide Shut than any other Kubrick film. The world of both movies is essentially one and the same. There is also a sensuality in both films that is accentuated by the perfectionist and rich stylings of both movies. Another common denominator is a rhythmic dreamlike intensity that blend the lines between dreams and reality. Yet, Nocturnal Animals is less eroticized and that perhaps is a sign of our times; sex is no longer the escapist element of movies, love is.
