There is a type of psychological tension running throughout Nocturnal Animals that is very Lynchian. These particular vibes are also introduced in Nocturnal Animal‘s eccentric opening. Explicitly, the scene in which a family is tormented by three bad men on a lonely road is recalls Blue Velvet‘s “candy coloured clown” sequence; More subtly in such moments as Michael Sheen’s statement on the art world being crazy but a hell of a lot better than the ‘real world.’
