8 – BLOOD DIAMOND by Edward Zwick (2006) / Zwick’s Blood Diamond is especially worth pointing out in this list of landmark DiCaprio performances because it was, as has been pointed out by many critics, the moment in which DiCaprio appeared to have become completely mature. In other words, he was no longer expected to be a teen idol in any way. Here, in a Shouth African accent, he is meant to be the hero, but doesn’t behave like one: he is ambiguous to the point of being despicable, a scum. Physically, he takes a toll. He is still in shape, but he’s dirty and apparently charmless. It is the pre-cursor to The Revenant (in an arguably better movie overall).
