We Want the Colonels is a comedy about an ultra-right-wing congressman who uses his ties with the Italian army to organize a coup d’etat. The story was inspired by a similar event that had taken place a few years prior in Italy.
Under the direction of a master of the commedia all’italiana like Mario Monicelli, the film is colourful, wild and to some extent even stands out as a vivid satire that is not too concerned without being politically correct. An array of colourful and often caricatural characters is led by a superbly histrionic Ugo Tognazzi, who plays the sly, charming and devilishly determined, morally questionable congressman. The story itself, however, is a little too intricate and frustratingly confusing. – 3/5
