Woody Allen, one of the most important figures in American cinema history, celebrates his 81st birthday today. Here is a list of 10 of his landmark films (up to this point) in chronological order.
10. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (2011)
For a while, Woody Allen was deemed “box office poison,” for reasons that more often than not actually transcended the films themselves.
In 2011, he experienced artistic rebirth and commercial success in his Parisian dreamlike feature Midnight in Paris; a delightful and intelligent time-traveling (!) comedy in which he is blatantly inspired by the French capital, its magic, its art and its history from an absolutely personal and romanticized point of view. In this sense, it was not unlike the ode to cinematic escapism which he depicted in The Purple Rose of Cairo.
From then on, with the exception of the To Rome With Love (2012) misstep, his films have been consistently interesting, and having past the landmark age of 80, we can only hope that he will continue to grace the big screens for a long time to come.
