Woody Allen, one of the most important figures in American cinema history, celebrates his 81st birthday today. Here is a list of 10 of his landmark films (up to this point) in chronological order.
6. THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO (1985)
Allen’s golden period carried on into the early 1980s, during which time he grew in confidence. From this time, Allen has often quoted The Purple Rose of Cairo as his favorite because it was, to paraphrase him, one of the ones where the end result came closest to whatever he had originally envisioned while writing the screenplay.
In this film, he also successfully flirts with fantastic elements, transferring a matinee idol from the film world to the real world, where he pursues a romance with a woman who is in love with him too.
It is the ultimate tribute to the escapism of cinema, especially that offered by the medium during the Great Depression, as well as the daydream of an avid cinephile.
