Woody Allen, one of the most important figures in American cinema history, celebrates his 81st birthday today. Here is a list of 10 of his landmark films (up to this point) in chronological order.
8. CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS (1989)
Even up to this point, the films of Woody Allen could be identified with Jewishness, which played an important factor in the shaping of his characters and in the markings of the cultural settings in which the stories took place.
In Crime and Misdemeanors (1989), religious conscience and religious upbringing are an essential central theme that is more evident here than in any of the director’s previous works. This also makes it a personal confrontation, a fact represented by the bitterness which defines the work’s tone, particularly in the moments that seem to refer to Dostoevsky’s dilemmas on morality.
Allen even showed unparalleled commitment to his project when he recalled his cast and crew to re-shoot the film’s first act after its completion.
