Amy Schumer is in talks to take on the role of all-time favourite Mattel childhood toy Barbie in an upcoming Sony live-action film.
Schumer will be cast as an “imperfect” and eccentric version of the traditionally perfectly proportioned, big-eyed, blonde-haired toy. Schumer’s Barbie will be living in a Barbieland, unable to fit in among the 180-plus Barbie characters. Because of this, she will leave the town, ending up in the real world and making all types of new discoveries, which will cause her to realize the only key to happiness is to love yourself and stop trying to climb toward an unattainable standard of perfection.
The casting of Schumer in the film’s lead drops the hint that the film will aim to turn the popular toy character into a role model of feminism and gender equality.
The film is set to be produced by Walter Parkes, Lori MacDonald and Amy Pascal. Principal photography will begin in the spring for a release tentatively schedule in the summer of 2018.
