Fellini’s “La Strada” returns to UK cinemas, May 19

Federico Fellini’s Academy Award winning 1954 film La Strada will return to British cinemas for a limited theatrical run in a new digital 2k restoration on May 19, which will be followed by a DVD/Blu-Ray/EST release from Studiocanal on June 5.

La Strada is credited as the film that launched the careers of its director Fellini and actress Giulietta Masina to international stardom. Here, Masina plays Gelsomina, the young and naive wife and assistant to the boorish strongman Zampanò (Anthony Quinn), who constantly abuses her as she struggles to learn the tricks of the street circus trade. She finds a kindred spirit in Zampanò’s rival the Fool (Richard Basehart), and soon the three find themselves part of the same traveling circus with tragic consequences.

Coinciding with the film’s release, there will be a new stage adaptation of La Strada, directed by Sally Cookson, on a UK tour now until May 27. The show will receive its London Premiere at The Other Palace on May 30 until July 8.
